A day in the life of a support worker…
Each day is different, but what can you, as a support worker typically expect?
When you turn up on shift, you will be greeted by the previous day’s support staff. Here, they will give you handover, detailing the events from the previous 24 hours, or more if needs be. Once the handover is complete, the previous staff member will leave you in charge of the property. From there, the young person’s day will vary however you will be looking at providing support for the young person in the house, from basic tasks such as washing up and cleaning, to taking them out to fun and engaging activities like go karting, football, art classes, musical endeavours and any other hobbies that the young person may have.
You will also be in charge of liaising with social workers, IROs, PAs and any other relevant professionals with which the young person works.
There may be days that are far more challenging however and we can not shy away from this fact. Often you will need to act as an appropriate adult for a young person during a challenging time such as a police interview, a hospital appointment, a family visit (often not a positive experience for some young people), court appearances and the like. While these will be the challenging days, there are often days that are extremely chilled out, having fun with the YP and other staff members.
Why work for Onward Path Care?
While we understand we are not the biggest company, we are determined to be the best and that starts with our staff members. As those working closest with the young people, it is important that our support staff are themselves supported, engaged with and listened to on matters concerning the young people.
How do we ensure that we are the best company to work for you might ask? Well, we ensure you are fairly remunerated for your work. Any sleep in shifts will be paid at an hourly rate, rather than the standard flat rate per shift. Not only this but we pay a higher hourly wage to ensure that you do not need to burn yourselves out working every day you can just to get by.
We ensure an environment of total openness with monthly supervisions and a quarterly company performance reviews, where any issues you may have can be discussed in an open forum and anything you like about working for the company can be brought up so we can continue to implement these procedures. You will never be punished or argued with if you have any concerns, in fact we welcome criticism as it helps us to grow as a company and is always best for the young people and the staff.
We also incorporate quarterly staff days/nights out so that we as directors can get to know our staff as well as possible and you as staff can get to know us as well.
